How to use it
- Enter a size and its unit.
- Choose a decimal (GB) or binary (GiB) unit to convert to.
- Check the full table to compare both systems.
Examples
The missing drive space
A 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is 0.909 TiB. Systems that label TiB as “TB” show it as about 931 GB.
Network vs file sizes
Speeds are usually in bits: a 100 megabit per second connection moves 12.5 megabytes per second at best.

Decimal and binary units
Storage makers use decimal (SI) prefixes: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. Binary (IEC) units use powers of 1,024: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes.
Windows reports sizes in binary units but labels them KB, MB and GB, which is why the numbers look smaller than the box says. macOS uses decimal units since 2009.
1 GB = 10⁹ bytes · 1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes = 1.073741824 GB
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB 1,000 MB or 1,024 MB?
Strictly, 1 GB is 1,000 MB and 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB. In everyday use “GB” is used for both, so check which one a program means.
How many bits are in a byte?
Eight. Internet speeds in megabits per second (Mbps) divide by 8 to get megabytes per second.
Why does my phone show less storage than advertised?
Partly the decimal/binary difference, and partly space used by the operating system and preinstalled apps.
