How to use it

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste your text (or Base64 string).
  3. Turn on URL-safe mode for Base64url, which uses - and _ instead of + and / and drops padding.

Examples

Encoding text

“Hello, world!” encodes to SGVsbG8sIHdvcmxkIQ==.

Reading a token payload

The middle part of a JWT is Base64url. Paste it with URL-safe mode on to read the JSON claims. (Decoding doesn't verify the signature.)

What Base64 does

Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable characters, so it can travel through systems that only handle text, such as email or JSON. Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, making the output about 33% larger; = signs pad the end.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never treat Base64 as a way to hide secrets.

encoded length = 4 × ⌈bytes ÷ 3⌉

Frequently asked questions

Why do accented letters and emoji work here but not in some tools?

The browser's built-in btoa only accepts Latin-1. This tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes first, so any language and emoji round-trip correctly.

What's Base64url?

A variant that replaces + with - and / with _, and usually omits = padding, so the result is safe inside URLs and filenames. JWTs use it.

Can I decode images?

This tool decodes to text. Binary data such as images will decode but show as unreadable characters.
