Examples
HEX to RGB
#FF8800 is rgb(255, 136, 0) — each pair of hex digits is one channel from 00 (0) to FF (255).
Checking text contrast
Pure #777777 gray on white has a 4.48:1 ratio, just under the 4.5:1 WCAG AA minimum for normal-size text.
How the formats relate
HEX and RGB are the same thing written differently: red, green and blue channels from 0 to 255. HSL describes the same color as hue (0–360°), saturation and lightness, which is easier to adjust by hand.
Contrast ratio follows the WCAG 2 formula using relative luminance. WCAG AA asks for at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text; AAA asks for 7:1 and 4.5:1.
contrast = (L₁ + 0.05) ÷ (L₂ + 0.05), where L is relative luminance
Frequently asked questions
What does the 3-digit hex shorthand mean?
Each digit is doubled: #F80 is #FF8800. This converter accepts both forms.
Why might HSL round-trip to a slightly different hex?
HSL values are rounded to whole numbers, so converting back can shift a channel by one step. Copy the HEX or RGB value when you need an exact match.
Does it support transparency?
Not yet — alpha values in #RRGGBBAA or rgba() aren't accepted. Convert the opaque color and add opacity separately.
