Why area factors are squared

Area units are lengths multiplied together, so their conversion factors are squared: a foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². That's why 1 m² is about 10.76 sq ft, not 3.28.

An acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, and a hectare is 10,000 square meters (a square 100 m on each side).

1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² · 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² · 1 ha = 10,000 m²

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to square meters quickly?

Divide by 10.764, or multiply by 0.0929. For a rough figure, divide by 10.

How big is an acre?

About 4,047 square meters, or roughly 90% of an American football field without the end zones.
