Exact conversion factors

Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters. Every imperial length follows from that: a foot is 0.3048 m, a yard 0.9144 m and a mile 1,609.344 m.

A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters and is used in aviation and shipping. All conversions go through meters, so results are exact apart from rounding for display.
