  2. Pick the scale to convert to, or read all three at once.
  3. Negative values are fine — just type a minus sign.

Examples

Oven temperature

180 °C is 356 °F, which recipes usually round to 350 °F.

Fever check

38 °C is 100.4 °F, a common threshold for a fever.

The conversion formulas

Fahrenheit and Celsius differ in both scale and starting point: water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F). So you multiply by 9/5 and add 32 to go from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Kelvin uses the same step size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero, so 0 K is −273.15 °C. There are no negative Kelvin temperatures.

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 · K = °C + 273.15

Frequently asked questions

What's a quick way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?

Double the Celsius figure and add 30. It's close for everyday temperatures: 20 °C gives 70 °F (exact: 68 °F).

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

At −40. −40 °C is exactly −40 °F.

Why isn't it “degrees Kelvin”?

Kelvin is an absolute scale, so values are written simply as kelvins (K) without the degree sign.
