How to use it
- Enter the start time and end time. If the end time is earlier than the start, it's treated as the next day.
- Optionally enter break minutes to subtract unpaid time.
- Read the duration in hours and minutes, or in decimal hours for a timesheet.
Examples
Day shift
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch is 8 h 00 min, or 8.00 decimal hours.
Night shift
10:00 PM to 6:15 AM crosses midnight and comes to 8 h 15 min, which is 8.25 decimal hours.
How the time difference is calculated
Both times are converted to minutes after midnight and subtracted. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator adds 24 hours, because a shift that ends at 6 AM after starting at 10 PM finishes the next morning.
Decimal hours divide the minutes by 60. Payroll systems use decimals, so 7 hours 45 minutes is entered as 7.75, not 7.45.
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 20 minutes is about 0.33.
Does this handle daylight saving time?
No. It measures clock time on a normal day. On the night clocks change, an overnight shift is one hour longer or shorter than the clock difference suggests.
Can I total several shifts?
Use the work hours calculator, which adds up a full week of shifts and separates regular hours from overtime.
