How to use it

  1. Enter your gross (pre-tax) annual salary.
  2. Adjust hours per week and days per week if you don't work a standard 40-hour, 5-day week.
  3. Lower weeks per year if some of your time off is unpaid. Leave it at 52 if all leave is paid.

Examples

$60,000 a year

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $60,000 is $28.85 an hour, $1,153.85 a week and $5,000 a month.

Part-time salary

A $36,000 salary for 30 hours a week works out to $23.08 an hour — higher than a full-time job paying $45,000.

How annual salary becomes an hourly rate

Multiply the hours you work each week by the number of paid weeks in a year to get your yearly hours, then divide your salary by that. A standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.

Monthly pay is the salary divided by 12, and semi-monthly pay (twice a month) is divided by 24. Biweekly pay (every two weeks) is two weeks' pay; there are usually 26 biweekly paydays a year, which is why some months have three.

hourly = salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)

Gross versus take-home pay

These figures are gross pay before tax, retirement contributions and other deductions. Your take-home pay depends on where you live and your benefits, so it will be lower than the numbers shown here.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Some employers use 2,080 minus holidays, or 1,950 hours for a 37.5-hour week.

Should I include paid vacation in weeks per year?

Yes. If your vacation and holidays are paid, leave weeks per year at 52 because you are paid for all of them. Reduce it only for unpaid time off.

What's the quick rule of thumb?

Divide the annual salary by 2,000 for a rough hourly rate, or double the hourly rate and add three zeros for the salary. $50,000 is about $25 an hour.
