Examples
Fixing caps lock
“tHE QUICK BROWN FOX” in sentence case becomes “The quick brown fox”.
Headline
Title Case turns “a guide to the best tools for writers” into “A Guide to the Best Tools for Writers”, keeping short words like “to” and “the” lowercase.
Code identifiers
“user account id” becomes userAccountId (camelCase), user_account_id (snake_case) or user-account-id (kebab-case).
The case styles
Sentence case capitalizes only the first letter of each sentence (and the word “I”). Title Case capitalizes the major words and leaves short articles, conjunctions and prepositions lowercase unless they start or end the title, similar to AP and Chicago style. Capitalized Case capitalizes every word.
The programming styles split your text into words (including splitting existingCamelCase) and join them: camelCase and PascalCase remove spaces, snake_case uses underscores and kebab-case uses hyphens.
Frequently asked questions
Will sentence case keep names capitalized?
No. Sentence case lowercases everything except sentence starts and “I”, so proper nouns like “London” need to be fixed by hand afterwards.
Which words stay lowercase in title case?
Short articles, conjunctions and prepositions such as a, an, the, and, but, or, of, in, on, to and for — unless they are the first or last word.
