Examples

Essay limit check

A 1,000-word essay takes about 4 minutes to read silently and about 7 minutes to read aloud.

Tightening a draft

If “really” appears in your top words, it's a sign you can cut filler without losing meaning.

What counts as a word

A word is a run of letters or numbers. Hyphenated words (“well-known”) and contractions (“don't”) count as one word, which matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count. Punctuation and symbols on their own are not words.

Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts as one character even if it is stored as several bytes.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction found in a 2019 meta-analysis by Brysbaert. Speaking time assumes 140 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or saved.

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word?

Tools differ slightly in edge cases like URLs, numbers with commas and em dashes between words. Differences are usually within one or two percent.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About two pages single-spaced or four pages double-spaced, in a 12-point font with standard margins.

How are sentences detected?

A sentence ends with a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Abbreviations like “e.g.” can occasionally be counted as sentence endings.
