How to use it
- Type or paste your text.
- Check the counts with and without spaces.
- Watch the limit bars: they turn red when you go over a platform's limit.
Examples
SMS length
A standard SMS holds 160 characters using the basic GSM alphabet. Adding an emoji switches the message to Unicode, which cuts the limit to 70 characters per segment.
Search snippet
Google truncates meta descriptions by pixel width, which usually works out to around 150–160 characters on desktop.
How characters are counted
Every visible character, space and line break counts. Emoji and letters with accents are counted as single characters, the way you see them.
Platform limits aren't always counted the same way: X counts every link as 23 characters regardless of length, and some systems count emoji as two. Treat the limit bars as a guide and leave a little headroom.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
In most limits, yes — spaces, punctuation and line breaks all count. The “without spaces” figure is useful for assignments or translation quotes that exclude them.
What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?
Standard accounts can post 280 characters. Links count as 23 characters each no matter how long they are.
How long should a page title be?
Around 50–60 characters is a common guideline so titles are less likely to be cut off in search results, though search engines measure by pixel width.
