How to use it

  1. Enter your weight in pounds.
  2. Enter your height in feet and inches.
  3. Read your BMI and compare it with the categories below. For metric units, convert first with the weight and length converters.

Examples

5 ft 9 in, 160 lb

BMI is 23.6, in the 18.5–24.9 range. For that height, the range corresponds to roughly 125–169 lb.

5 ft 10 in, 200 lb

BMI is 28.7, which falls in the 25–29.9 category.

How BMI is calculated

BMI is weight divided by height squared. In metric units that's kg ÷ m²; with pounds and inches the result is multiplied by 703 to give the same number.

The adult categories used by the CDC and WHO are: below 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy weight, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obesity. They don't apply to children and teens, who use age- and sex-specific percentiles.

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²

Limits of BMI

BMI is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can score high, and it doesn't capture where fat is carried. Talk to a healthcare professional about what your number means for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Often not. Muscle is dense, so athletes can have a BMI in the overweight range while having low body fat. Waist measurement or body-composition tests give more context.

Does BMI differ for men and women?

The adult formula and categories are the same for both. Body-fat levels at a given BMI do differ, which is one reason BMI is only a screening tool.

How do I use kilograms and centimeters?

Divide your weight in kg by your height in meters squared — for 70 kg and 1.75 m that's 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9. Or convert to pounds and inches first with our converters.
