How to use it
- Enter the bill amount. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount; use whichever you prefer.
- Set the tip percentage — 15–20% is typical for table service in the US.
- Enter how many people are paying and choose whether to round each share up.
Examples
Dinner for two
An $85.00 bill with a 15% tip is $12.75, for a total of $97.75. Split two ways that's $48.88 each, or $49 each if you round up (an effective 15.3% tip).
Group of three
A $100 bill at 20% comes to $120, which splits evenly into $40 per person.
How the tip is calculated
The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and each person's share is the total divided by the number of people.
When you round up, each share is raised to the next whole dollar. The effective tip shows what percentage you are really leaving after rounding, so you can see the extra is usually small.
tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100 · per person = (bill + tip) ÷ people
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the final total for simplicity. The difference is typically well under a dollar on an average meal.
How much should I tip?
Customs vary by country and service. In the US, 15–20% is common for restaurant table service. In many European countries service is included and rounding up is normal. Check local norms when travelling.
What's a quick way to calculate a 20% tip?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.
