How to use it

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount percentage. Add an extra discount if a second promotion applies after the first.
  3. Optionally add your sales tax rate to see what you'll actually pay at the register.

Examples

25% off $80

You save $20, so the sale price is $60.

Stacked discounts aren't additive

20% off plus an extra 10% off a $100 item gives $72, not $70. The second discount applies to the already reduced $80, for an effective 28% off.

How the sale price is calculated

Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). For 25% off, you pay 75% of the price. A second discount multiplies again by its own factor, so stacked discounts compound rather than add up.

Sales tax, if you add it, is applied to the discounted price, which is how most US retailers calculate it.

sale price = price × (1 − d₁ ÷ 100) × (1 − d₂ ÷ 100)

Frequently asked questions

Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the combined discount is 1 − 0.8 × 0.9 = 28%, slightly less than 30%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). An item that costs $60 after 25% off was originally 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

In most US states, sales tax is charged on the discounted price for store discounts. Manufacturer coupons are sometimes taxed on the pre-coupon price; rules vary by state.
